This was by far the most clean, organized, and welcoming VRBO we have stayed in. Because of its distance to a town, Maria let us know ahead of time so we could plan accordingly. She went out of her way to make sure we had access to the home that best fit our schedule. The house is beautifully decorated, has quality linens, nicely done appliances, and small comforts of home. Seating is everywhere:)
This place is simply amazing. Calming, welcoming, and serene. Went there with my spouse and our two labs and had an amazing time. Will definitely be back.
We had an amazing weekend stay at this property. Pictures cannot do it justice. The home is beautiful and elegantly updated, the backyard and river is gorgeous, and the hike near the house is like an enchanted forest - we encountered so many beautiful butterflies! I highly recommend a stay at this property; this place is a one of a kind gem.
We always love coming here. Maria and Randy are top notch hosts and always go above and beyond to make the stay great. We had everything we needed and had a great time relaxing by the river, sitting by the camp fire, relaxing inside with a great view, and just enjoying everything the Piney River has to offer. Thanks again for an amazing stay! Great communication as well!
We had an absolutely wonderful stay at The Chestnut House! The pictures online were beautiful, but seeing it in person was even better. The picturesque landscape and the calming sounds of the Piney River truly made it feel like a slice of heaven. The host went above and beyond, providing unexpected extras like donuts, eggs, and popsicles. My 1-year-old and 5-year-old grandchildren had an absolute blast. We will definitely be returning!
We absolutely loved our stay at this cozy cottage in the Virginia hills! It had everything we needed, and we were able to cook meals easily since everything worked perfectly. The owners were fantastic and even helped us celebrate our 6-year-old's birthday with a special treat. Just a small note for future guests: if you go for a walk and take a right out of the cottage, then another immediate right over the little bridge, you'll come across a house about a quarter mile down with some aggressive dogs. Just be cautious in that area or if you have small childrenor pets avoid it completely. Overall, we had a fantastic time and can't wait to return!
The pictures as good as they are still don't show just how beautiful this place really is.Very well appointed and everything you could possibly think of is there.
We were amazed with the extensive property and beautifully outfitted home. All areas were spotless including a shed and an outdoor barn space shockingly clean, all lawn was recently cut so we could make use of all the spaces in so many ways. Even the windows were like new and we could open windows and it was spotless not a bug in the screens. Can't express how clean the inside was, with lots of decor, games, books. I cooked a lot and the kitchen had every option you might need. Appliances seemed brand new. Huge dining room table. We also cooked over the fire pit using a tripod we brought and charcoal they had for the grill, and ate by the river, where we spent most of our time. With our dog we walked a couple miles on the gravel road into the national forest along the river and found much to explore there and blooming mountain laurel and rhododendron. We used this as a retreat while a family member is going through chemo for incurable cancer, and chose it due to it is closer than our home to UVA med in case of issues, it had the highest cleanliness rating, and we could feel like we were camping with our dog yet have a luxury lodging. We got that and more and can't wait to book another trip here. The communications were excellent. The chestnut tree is a treasure, the only place you'll ever see a mature American chestnut tree when it used to be one of the most common trees in the Appalachians. How it still lives when blight has made this tree extinct is a mystery.
We all loved the cottage in Alhambra. The setting was amazing and peaceful tucked in among the mountains and overlooking the creek. The inside was lovely and our hosts had the place outfitted to fill all of our needs. This was one of our favorite stays!
We really enjoyed our stay at the Chestnut House. Everything is so beautiful and complete with thoughtful touches. The setting of the home on the beautiful Piney River was so peaceful and provided with time to soak up some much needed solitude.
We absolutely loved our stay and the beautiful kitchen and huge gas stove were such a cozy touch. The open wood ceilings made it feel like a cabin. The water view was stunning and we had a blast fishing and enjoying the spacious yard. The whole experience felt so peaceful, especially with all the great hiking nearby. Highly recommend for anyone looking to recharge in nature.
Although off the beaten path and requires a little planning for groceries, this is an excellent place to unwind and sip your morning coffee beside the flowing stream. We so enjoyed spending a long weekend with family enjoying the quiet mountain setting. The house was immaculate and very well appointed with everything needed to prepare a wonderful meal, even fresh eggs provided by our lovely hosts! We could not have wished for anything else than what is already provided! Thank you.
Really cool property on the Piney River. Great fly fishing in the back yard. Tons of outdoor space- house itself is beautiful. Kids enjoyed their spring break hanging outside and fishing.
If you are looking for an escape from the busyness of life, this property offers the perfect opportunity. The home is a perfect mix of maintaining the history of the home and modern amenities. It is beautifully decorated and the owners have thought of every detail to provide a comfortable stay down to the basket of cozy blankets to the selection of gardening, home decor and fishing books! The host is so thoughtful and attentive with all messages. The property provides a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the river and the peace and quiet of the area. We look forward to the day we will return!
The home and location were great. Piney River is steps from the back door. George Washington National Forest surrounds the area with lots of opportunities to explore. The house was perfect. Well equipped kitchen and super comfortable.
We had such a nice getaway weekend at The Chestnut House. The Heistonâs went above and beyond to make our stay exceptional. The house was beautiful, cozy, and quiet. While sitting outside, the only thing we could hear was the relaxing sound of the river running through the backyard. The hosts made us feel very welcome and made it a wonderful experience. We would definitely book this home again. 10/10 recommend!
This was the perfect spot for our spring break getaway. The home was clean and a great mix of modern and rustic. The beds and furniture were comfy, and the kitchen a great place to cook and hang out. We loved coming back after some Appalachian Trail hiking to sink into the chairs by the gorgeous river. Maria was a thoughtful and considerate host who communicated clearly and kindly. We plan on returning to stay there again!
We could not have had a more wonderfully refreshing stay in this beautiful spot on the Piney River in the charming Chestnut House. Mariaâs thoughtfulness as a host cannot be understated. The home is supplied with every need and comfort. We slept soundly, enjoyed the fire pit, fishing, naps in the hammock, coffee in the front porch rockers, reading on the deck by the river, hikes from the house, and cooking in the beautifully stocked kitchen. We cannot wait to return!
We booked this property for a weekend break, and it was everything we hoped for and more! Pictures are accurate but can't possibly capture the impeccably designed and decorated house or the idyllic surroundings. The house was perfect for four adults, with a kitchen that rivals any we have seen. Everything, from the bed linens and bath towels to the kitchen supplies and wood fireplace, made our stay easy and special. We stayed on a rainy weekend, but the nearby Craft Beverage Trail (Nelson 151) was delightful and made for wonderful adventures. We look forward to returning in the spring or fall, to enjoy the outside as much as we did the inside.
Wow! This place was so amazing and has absolutely everything you need for the perfect getaway. It snowed while we were there and the beauty was breathtaking. The host are absolutely the most sweetest and generous hosts. Everything is so updated and clean and the host are super responsive if you need anything or have questions. Donât let another year pass without taking your family to this magical place.
We had a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday staying at the cottage. The house is exactly how you see in the pictures - charming, cozy, comfortable, clean and fully stocked with all the modern amenities you need. When we arrived, we were welcomed by a beautiful Thanksgiving table setting, a bottle of wine, fresh eggs in the fridge and a small gift from the owners. Maria and Randy made everything easy to navigate and checked in with us daily. While it was too cold to be outside for too long, there is plenty of space for any outdoor activity - and the house had lots of games and books for indoor activities as well. I highly recommend this home for a family or group of friends looking for a fun getaway. Thank you Maria and Randy. We will definitely be back!
The property is beautiful, and the home is cozy and warm. There is plenty of living space, fully stocked with house needs and comfortable couches/beds. The fire pit is beautiful and the stream is so relaxing. Also plenty of yard for games and activities.
Wonderful stay and just around the corner from break hikes, the i Erieâs and breweries.
