We had nice pleasant stay at the River Front Retreat. Everything was provided to make the stay comfortable. Property was friendly and was fast and easy to contact. I highly recommend the place for a relaxing getaway.

Fantastic 3 days staying at this property. The house was clean and just as described. The cozy river house was just what our group was looking for. The kitchen space was especially conducive for family-style meals and provided ample cooking space. Overall, felt like more than a house - truly a home!

Thanksgiving family trip

The home is in a very cool location. We loved the drive to the house. There were great views of the river. The home had everything needed to enjoy the river, but our stay was too cold to enjoy the river. Overall, the home was just what we were looking for!

4th of July weekend

The house was exactly as advertised. The house was well stocked with items needed for river activities, bbq, cleaning and entertaining. Very simple and easy to clean. Plenty of space for kids, and all the gates were safe to keep them in. The neighbors were friendly too.

Great location

The house is great and is in a great location, but needs a little attention / updating. Besides our challenges we made the best of it and had a great time. The manager was very responsive and accommodating.

What a great place for active families! Room for everyone in a relaxing setting. We enjoyed morning coffee and evening cocktails overlooking the river; borrowing the kayaks; being close to Shenandoah National Park for hiking; a ping-pong tournament; and evenings talking around the fire pit. It is true what other reviewers have said: the oven and the overall decor are a little dated. But we found the place tidy and great for families and pets. It feels lived in, but relaxed and perfect for our needs. My young adult sons plan to return with a group of friends. And the bonus is the host family is connected to a little piece of American history as you'll see if you stay there. Our host was super-responsive.

Very nice location and well stocked.

We stayed as we are in between houses and wanted to have a larger place to host and cook the holiday meal. I will say that the house could definitely use some updates and also a deep cleaning. Generally, it was comfortable and the views of the river are beautiful. The whole house was well stocked with just about anything we needed that we forgot to bring. I would have loved it more during warm weather but even during the winter, it was comfortable.

Great family vacation

We had another vacation for the books! Had a great time with family. Justin was very quick to respond to any needs. Some improvements from last year which was great. Dock still a little challenging. Downstairs mattresses could use an upgrade. Overall the location and space of the home is perfect! We really enjoyed vacation 2024 and hope to plan another for 2025!

The propane for Blackstone grill were out when we were cooking the steaks for first dinner.One of our guest got bitten by wasp. Saw other wasps in the house and killed only one of them. Suspected there's wasp nest inside the house.The mother of homeowner stopped by Saturday night and wanted to go inside the house.

Fun location

We loved driving through the cow pasture to get to the house - helped us slow down and relax! We were in town for a graduation, so siblings (and their young children) were all there. There were enough beds for us all, and the kitchen/dining area was cozy for us all. The younger kids enjoyed the yard, while parents could sit on the deck by the river. We had lots of events to attend over the weekend, so hadn't planned on using the house as a "river getaway", so I can't comment on the recreational aspects. Thanks for welcoming us.

Plenty of room for everyone

Everything was just as expected from what we saw of the listing photos. It gave us plenty of room for quiet reading by the fireplace or playing games around the table. The beds could use new mattresses or toppers for better sleeping. The three mile long dirt road was interesting with cattle and wild life. We may be back next year!

Review / Question

It was just right for what we needed. However, one of us left an aero-bed blow up mattress in the lower level by the ping pong table. Is it possible if we can swing by and get it in a few weeks. One of the guys will be in the area. Please let me know. Thank you very much for allowing us to use your rental location. It was a great time.

For the 3rd summer in a row we had a wonderful family vacation at your house! The new dock was enjoyed immensely by all! Feedback regarding negatives were that the house had a lot of dust, new kitchen stove and oven is needed (bottom oven still does not work), new fan is needed for screened in porch, and a new mattress is definitely needed in the 2nd bedroom in the basement (larger bed has smaller mattresses stacked underneath and is very uncomfortable). We will say that the positives were plenty and Justin was great with all of our needs! Thank you for another great family vacation full of memories at “the river house!”

Rustic

Beautiful view of water. Felt secluded from neighbors which we enjoyed. Plenty of rooms and space for family. Loved large kitchen and blackstone. Justin was responsive to concerns/questions. Negatives: old AC units/musty, both showers upstairs had trouble draining, coffee pot very slow. House definitely could use some updates but being right on the river and the views definitely outweighed any negatives.

The location was very nice, right on the river my husband loved fishing from the dock. Lots of space for our family to gather. Lots of sleeping areas pet friendly. Great water pressure in showers. Large kitchen. The cleanliness was our only problem. The shower curtains liners wear moldy and the shower curtain themselves were stained and dirty, I took the curtains down and washed them. I bought new shower curtain liners and installed them before my family arrived. The house had not been dusted ina long time, the surfaces of tables were very dirty. The curtains were filthy.

Eclectic & roomy but needs cleaning

The area is remote and lovely. The house is on the river so the view is great. Upon entering you see clearly dated and worn furniture, but the ample bedrooms and baths more than made up for that. The big negative was the lack of cleanliness. It appears someone made an attempt to clean, but sloppily made beds, cloudy, splattered windows, urine on the toilet bowl, grease on the stove...all made it feel dirty. That being said, the host was very quick to respond to entry issues and a broken toilet. We would not stay here again, but with a serious cleaning it would be a good option for a big group.

Relaxing Girls Weekend

Well stocked pantry, lots of toys for the river available for use. The river was a big low so the water wasn't moving much. Bathrooms were upgraded recently and clean. Some of the beds could use new mattresses. The firepit was excellent and firewood was available for use. The kitchen had all kinds of gadgets and serving ware. Had wifi and cell service. Beautiful hardwood floors upstairs. We met the manager while he was getting an estimate to redo the dock and clear out the view to the river, would like to see the transformation when it is complete.

Neat place, a bit out of the way

We really liked the property and the house was cool. We didn’t mind that it was older or may needs some updates, or even the spider webs (it’s expected in this environment) but it wasn’t very clean. We found old water bottles around the house, dirty wash clothes in the bathrooms, bathtubs were dirty, dirty linens, and other random trash. Not sure if the cleaning service isn’t taking care of things or that’s how it is. I did contact the owner to let them know but never heard back.

Homesteaders

This is the 2nd year we have stayed here for HOA. The house is old but has a story and i like that. There is plenty of room for the whole group to have our own space. The kitchen has everything we needed to cook our own meals. The view of the river is nice. We love the driveway to the house. Its filled with cows and lots of wildlife. Never know what you will see. Town isnt to far away. Overall this is a nice place to stay for our little get away. We enjoyed it. On the downside like last year the tub in the upstairs master bath does not drain properly so your standing in ankle deep water as you shower. The 2nd bedroom down the hall had an infestation of bugs on the window that somehow found their way into the room. Again like last time the grill was filthy so my husband spent time cleaning it so the next people can enjoy it on the deck. There was also a cast iron skillet that wasnt properly cleaned so we had to work on that to be able to enjoy our eggs.

Long weekend get-away

The house is as described. The kitchen is stocked very well. Lots of towels and bed linens. The upstairs rooms have window unit air conditioners, which worked very well. The basement rooms don't have air conditioners, but it was cool down there since it's a basement, and there were plenty of fans. Plenty of life vests, inner tubes, and floating mats. There is a neighborhood boat ramp down the street where we put the kayaks in the river. However, the ramp has a chain with a lock, so a boat can't be entered there. We liked that there is a gate at the top of the steps inside the house and outside on the decks. The boat dock is not level and very warped on the one side. Also, be aware that there is poison ivy everywhere there isn't grass, even creeping onto the steps going down to the dock. Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. We had pretty much everything we needed. We had fun playing ping pong, kayaking, fishing, and just relaxing.
