St. Petersburg

Nothing in St Petersburg is allowed to be built higher than the dome of St Isaac's Cathedral. As a result, you can see it's gleaming gold dome from nearly everywhere in the city. If you're staying at the Four Seasons, Astoria or W hotels then it's a great beacon to help you get back to them! It is worth getting a guide to explain what you are looking at inside as it's easy to miss so much of the rich history of the building, as you get carried away by the sheer scale of the cathedral. Also worth going up to the dome so you can walk around it on the inside for stunning views across the city.
I dreamt of becoming a ballerina when I was a little girl, so I studied ballet and restarted the classes two years ago. ... Watching 'The Nutcracker' in Skt. Petersburg was a treat and left me with big tears of joy!

The Mariinsky Theatre is known as one of the best venues for ballet and opera in the world. The audience will be made up of a complete cross-section of society from little girls in their best dresses, with parents in the tuxedos and bow tie, through to tourists in their jeans and polo shirts. The inside of the building is stunning, very traditional and old-school. It's worth paying the 150 roubles to hire the binoculars, as it allows you to skip the queue to the cloakrooms when you return them. The chairs aren't the most comfortable though. You shouldn't visit St Petersburg without a trip to see something here - it's such a part of the cultural heritage of the city.

May 2011 Kazan Cathedral, St. Petersburg Kazan Cathedral is a Russian Orthodox Church built in 1801 - 1811 by architect Andrey Voronikhin. Also known as Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, dedicated to this venerated icon. It was modeled upon the St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican. The former city square of the Old Russian Empire, this square its famous for holding the 1905 Bloody Sunday and the 1917 October Revolution. A massive square just in front of the Hermitage Museum, its a popular destination where carriages, skaters and tourists mix up. The statue in the middle is the Alexander Column, a 50 meters tall column thats unique of its kind. This enormous column was placed in the middle of Palace square to celebrate the victory of Russia over Napoleonic France. Unlike its ancient predecessors, at the top of the column there was not a statue of the respective emperor at the time
