It looked deserted but the sign said to go to a different hotel. I went there and it seemed normal so not an emergency thing. (Why is this not clear?) I got the keys but the outside key didn't work. The seemingly homeless man outside apparently had a key I could try and it worked. So I was staying in a hotel which had no staff or security that people in the street had access to... It was old, room wasn't cleaned, beds are old, but the location is amazing. If you don't mind the no staff and you sleep well anywhere, go for it... otherwise, no...

very good located but..
The hotel is very well located, really in the center which is an advantage. The negative part was that we had problems with the first (leaking heating) and 2nd room (also a leaking heating). Apparently they have/had serious problems with the heating, which resulted in hot heaters/rooms during the day as at night and leakage all over the floor. Unfortunately, we did not sleep well. Also, our room was on the street side and believe me there is a lot of noise from screaming people even at night. So maybe ask for a room at the back.

Ideale locatie, veelste veel lawaai
Het hotel ligt midden in Powell street. Ideale locatie. Alles is op loopafstand. Kabeltram onderaan de deur, De kamer is simpel maar schoon.Het personeel is vriendelijk. Geen ontbijt voorzieningen, maar in de straat genoeg restaurantjes. Voor een stedentrip is het een ideale locatie maar neem oordoppen mee. Het is echt heel rumoerig. We hadden een kamer geboekt met badkamer op de gang, maar kregen een upgrade met badkamer in de kamer.

Property needs to be upgraded and more attentive to care and maintenance. I didn’t know I had booked a shared bathroom room and that I would have to use the community one but the bathroom that was in my room had the lock broken! Which means that I couldn’t lock it to prevent the other shared room attendant from entering mine. Had to call to get someone to come lock it, luckily I didn’t have any valuables but still I am a solo traveler and this is unsafe. Also my room key card stopped working and had to text the front desk (which is not even located within the same building it’s across the street part of another hotel) to have someone come open my room. Well they said I could go pick it up because the repair guy was on break. This was at night but luckily it didn’t happen at 2AM in the morning because then that would have been unsafe and I probably would’ve been locked out of my room since front desk has weird hours. Save your money and book a proper hotel at either Hilton or Hyatt.

Excellent location, close to shops, dining and transportation. Better than expected for the price!! Very clean, quiet and safe property. Downside is I had no refrigerator or microwave, and no ice machine available, also no room service, which was very much needed for my 3 day stay. Overall I give it a 9 out of 10

Be aware that the room has no bathroom. Really close to cable car station. Great location for tourism.

Herbert’s more of a hostel than a hotel. I had their standard room, with a private bathroom for 4 nights. No cleaning through the stay. Herbert does not have any staff in the building, not even a receptionist. The entire staff sits in another hotel owned by the management 1/2 block away. Expect a minimal room, lumpy mattress, no service and you will be fine. The area is good. Starbucks across the street and Walgreens next door are convenient.

I had to check in at Stafford Hotel which was a bit inconvenient. Room was good size and right on cable car line. Morton’s is two blocks away & Union Square is close as well.

Lo que no me gustó es que las conecciones de luz hacen ruido, como si estuvieran a punto de hacer corto circuito, el edificio es súper viejo y entiendo por la época en qué fue construído, pero si ocupa algo de mantenimiento !

Could only stomach staying 1 night. Went for a conference and didnt know it also had permanent residents. When I went to sleep I was awoken every 10-15 min to the sound of a man screaming the floor below. When I called the front desk they said that resident had been a problem for years. The hotel was able to re-book me at a sister hotel but DO NOT STAY HERE.

It was exceedingly good value for money, and really, really clean. A good central location a block down from Union Square. Unfortunately another guest spent all night roaring and shouting so sleep was difficult. I would go back again, it was a good base to tour from

In the heart of Union Square =) everything in nearby! walking distance to Chinatown and Civic center you have all public transportation steps away and the main department stores just blocks away and many restaurant options close by.

A truly iconic hotel to stay at. The property is well maintained and clean. While there is no concierge at the lobby, check in is at a hotel a block away. Located a block from Union Square, it makes it a very centric location. My only negative was the night commotions of the locals. Lots of shouting and noise. I had to close my window. Aside from that, I enjoyed my stay at Herbert Hotel.

Certainly it is very bare bones basic, as you must expect for a budget hotel and unless you pay more you need to use the shower and toilet down the hall, something which seems to have been lost on a lot of people reviewing the Herbert. It's also required to check in at the Stratford, which is half a block up Powell Street, which some find off-putting but it didn't bother me at all. I was on the 7th floor, it was very quiet, the bed was comfortable and I slept well. The location is about as central as you can get, the BART, F-Line and cable cars. I would not only stay here again but would recommend it to anyone who doesn't expect a chocolate on the pillow when staying at a hotel...

The hotel was updated about 10 years ago with nice decor. My room was very basic and in need of maintenance. There was a faint Chinese food odor but I couldn't identify the source. Main advantage was being close to downtown and the Moscone Center.

The location was excellent! The room was clean and comfortable and quiet. I was not clear about what it meant that the bathroom was not in the room but down the hall. The in room coffee setup was incomplete. The antique heater was not working properly and no instructions were provided to operate it. We had to call to have the trash taken away.

Things to keep in mind: No staffed lobby on property site. To check in or even be able to talk to anyone about your reservation, you have to walk up a block to a different hotel to do all of that. Had to call the hotel to figure this out after half an hour of not seeing any staff at all. I stayed in a standard room, which thankfully did come with a personal bathroom (rather than shared). But it was a very small, old room. Very stuffy. Window had no safety, you could open it and fall out - very dangerous. TV is old. Only about 5 channels available, very grainy image. My towels had blonde hair all over them. The mattress.. so bouncy with no support, you sink into it. I left with a bad back ache. Walls are thin and I could hear the people next door watching TikTok all night. I only stayed for two nights, just a quick trip which was a good thing. For a longer stay, I don’t recommend. Only thing I can say is the hotel is in a very convenient location - Walgreens and Starbucks right next door, with Union Square right up the street and Muni station a street down.
