We love Maui Kai and have been returning guests since 2012. You simply can’t beat the views, oceanfront location, and easy access to great food. Though the building is over 50 years old, Maui Kai does a great job with ongoing updates to keep things fresh. We previously stayed in Unit 202 and had a wonderful experience — even greeted with a fresh pineapple! Since Units 202 and 203 were once owned or managed by the same people and are mirror images of each other, we assumed the quality and condition would be similar. Unfortunately, Unit 202 wasn’t available this trip, so we booked Unit 203 expecting a comparable experience. However, Unit 203 is in serious need of renovation. The VRBO photos don’t reflect its current condition. Upon arrival, lights were left on but the A/C was off, leaving the unit hot and stuffy (though it did smell clean). The exterior door frame rusted, the bathroom light had lint/dust buildup, ceiling holes, rusted braces, and a patched-over soap niche. On the lanai, the furniture was so rusted I felt like I needed a tetanus shot before using them. Other issues included broken drawers, broken binoculars, a separating sliding door, stuck lanai screens, corroded handles, unusable beach chairs, dirty carpet, and constant vent condensation. We were very disappointed with Unit 203’s condition and won’t book it again. In the future, we’ll plan our stays around Unit 202’s availability - it remains well-maintained with excellent reviews (4.92 from 140 guests).
