When the Gulf calls, cross the JFK Causeway and North Padre Island opens up: Packery Channel and its jetties in about ten minutes, then drive-on sand at Whitecap Beach and Padre Balli Park a few minutes past that. Mustang Island State Park sits farther up the shore, and the sixty-plus undeveloped miles of Padre Island National Seashore run south from there. Head the other direction and downtown Corpus Christi is roughly half an hour out, with the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington anchoring the bayfront. A full grocery run is under ten minutes up Waldron Road — the unglamorous detail that makes a whole week here easy.
