Colmar: A city to be discovered without moderation!
For Georges Duhamel (who wrote it in 1931), Colmar was the “most beautiful city in the world”… It is also often said that it is the most Alsatian city in Alsace!
Without entering into superlatives, Colmar is undoubtedly an exceptional city with the richness and variety of its historical and architectural heritage.
It is located close to Germany and Switzerland, between the Vosges and the Rhine, Strasbourg and Mulhouse. The city offers visitors a striking shortcut to over a thousand years of European history. Moreover, with its 67,000 inhabitants, Colmar retains the charm of a “city in the countryside,” which adds to its unique appeal.
Despite the ups and downs of a turbulent history, the city has managed to preserve an exceptional homogeneity in its historic center, which, classified as a “protected sector,” has benefited from permanent restoration and enhancement. The vast pedestrian area of the old town allows visitors to admire the countless treasures of a heritage as rich as it is diverse, ranging from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Whether it’s the Maison des Têtes (built in the early 17th century) that owes its name to the 111 heads adorning its facade, or the Maison Pfister, a beautiful Renaissance bourgeois house but with medieval design, each of its monuments is unique.
Colmar’s religious art is also very rich: the Church of the Dominicans, which houses the famous “Virgin of the Rosebush” by Alsatian painter and engraver Martin Schongauer, and the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin, are wonderful examples of pure and simple Gothic art.
While strolling through the streets, visitors, in awe, discover the many beautiful signs, the colorful rooftops... While wandering along the Quai de la Poissonnerie, once the nerve center of fishing and fish sales, one falls under the charm of this picturesque neighborhood, now called “Little Venice.”
