On the positive side, we found the home was very clean, the beds were comfortable, the bathroom showers were great, the kitchen well-stocked with utensils, and the location very close to Route 93 and access to Boston. There was parking for three cars, and enough bedrooms for our multi-generational family. Stoneham offers cafes and restaurants within walking distance.However, there is considerable noise and light from the constant traffic along Montvale Ave. The upstairs bedrooms that face the avenue catch light from headlights and noise from accelerating engines all night, making sleep difficult. Our daughter had to buy a sound machine and extra sheets to put over the window in order to get any sleep. When we suggested to the host that opaque, noise-reducing curtains would help in those rooms, he said since we were visiting family “this wasn’t a surprise neighborhood situation.” There are two space heaters in the home. Since these pose a safety risk, we didn’t use them. If it was necessary to keep them on all night and day to prevent frozen pipes, we should have been told! As it was, the pipes in the kitchen froze and we lost water in that room.The furnishings are bare-boned, ceiling lighting only, so the feel is industrial, not cozy. We asked for bedside lamps to provide safety for folks needing to get out of bed in the dark. We hope the host makes some simple improvements, because his investment, and the comfort of his guests, are well worth it.
