This elk frames Appalachia in the sense of this small town pride in the mountains. In the background you can see the historic elementary school and rolling mountains and once again the North Carolina pride of the state flag surrounding this elk even though about 100ft to the right there is another flagpole with the same flags raised high and proud.   • Throughout my childhood I spent so much time at this park. I always remember of thinking of it as the park in the middle of the mountains. What I never noticed as a child was how every single aspect of this park was planned out and put there for a reason. Likewise before studying the photographic image I had never thought about how we construct a image and its affordances and constraints. One thing I really want to point out in this image is that while we have this beautiful park there is a huge ugly pipe in the middle of the photograph. It is part of the necessity of the planning of the park, just like the frame is a necessity of an image. We sometimes want to forget it is there but it is a necessary part of an image and still has meaning. #appalachianechoes

We had a great stay! Perfect for two families!! Beds were comfortable, house was clean, and host was very responsive. If you are planning to cook, you will want to make sure you bring anything you need - the only basics at the house were salt and pepper and a couple of other spices.

This was an amazing get away trip for our family. This house exceeded way beyond our expectations. The pictures don’t do it justice on the website. Everything was comfortable and cozy. The views are breathtaking and so amazing to wake up to. Watching the deer every morning and evening are remarkable. We had ages ranging from 19 to 92 so this house definitely accommodates all ages.

Perfectly located property. Wildlife is amazing. The house was perfect with multiple rooms with king beds to accommodate adult couples. Everything was as advertised. Only hiccup was quite a bit of dirty utencils and cookware, but that is partly to blame on past guests. Would definitely recommend.

Great Cabin with amazing views

Love the location and views from this cabin. Short drive to the city but far enough away to feel secluded and surrounded by nature. Loved watching the deer grazing all around the cabin. The house was very clean, spacious, and well appointed. We would definitely return again!

The home is lovely and offers everything a family could need. Soooo many things to do and see!! We had 6 adults and 3 children. House was perfect. The area/view is stunning. Our only suggestion!…..round plates The rectangular do not go in microwave. We would highly recommend to anyone! Loved the quiet and the gorgeous sunrises. Thank you so much!!!!

Fabulous views, chilly snooze

The home was clean and well appointed. The views were magnificent. One disappointment is that the home is three levels with only one zone for the HVAC system for the whole house. Hot air rises, so the family members who slept in the queen bed and bunkbeds on the bottom floor were cold given there is no thermostat on that level. (One other item - a quick fix - there is a nail protruding on the center of the step just above the landing on the ground level).

Excellent stay!

My party of 10 from medical school had a wonderful time on our school ski trip. We enjoyed cooking some great meals in the well stocked kitchen, fantastic views and a clean hot tub. The care instruction for the hot tub were simple and kept the water crystal clear all weekend long. Thanks John and family for sharing your beautiful home with us!!

Great place!

There were 10 of us and there was plenty of room to eat, sleep and to relax together! What a wonderful place to celebrate Thanksgiving! We all enjoyed watching the MANY deer come and eat in the fields and on the hills around us. Some of us went up to Beech Mountain to sled and the rest of us shopped in Boone and visited Grandfather Mountain.

We had a wonderful time! The house is fantastic and the views are spectacular. The only complaint I have is that what is described as a "separate water closet" in the upstairs master suite does not offer any privacy if someone else is in the bathroom because the door to the "separate water closet" has been removed. The same is true of the bathroom on the main level.
