The most absurd hotel check-in experience in my 30–40 years of travel:
Arrived at 9:20 p.m. to be told the hotel was overbooked and I would be moved to another hotel eight minutes away. It was dark, raining, and I was exhausted from a crowded flight with luggage.
I had a two-night reservation. I asked if I could just stay at the alternate hotel for both nights, but the AC Hotel insisted I return after the first night. I had a full day of work meetings and no time to check out, move, and check back in. The front desk staff member showed no empathy and said that if I didn’t return, they wouldn’t pay for the second night at the other hotel anyway.
I asked why they hadn’t contacted me earlier so I could go straight to the other hotel. They claimed they had no way to reach me because I booked through Expedia. This was false—Expedia had been emailing and texting me about this trip, and I even received a “How was your check-in?” email that same day. The hotel made no effort to alert a supposedly valued customer of the issue.
Why me, a guest with a two-night stay? Surely another guest with a single-night stay would have been easier to move. Why the overbooking? I made my reservation weeks ago, not yesterday. If the system anticipated an overbooking, it should have been resolved in advance. This reflects poor management by the AC Hotel. I had a similar experience at a Hilton in Chicago; they moved me to a more upscale Hilton hotel and asked me to remain there throughout. 😡😡😡
