In spite of some very lovely staff, this hotel is in an appalling state and desperately need of a facelift. Water damage on the walls, peeling paint, leaking toilets, a broken shower and windows that havenât been cleaned in years. The owners need to spend a lot of money on this establishment that must have been spectacular in the past, as neither it or the staff deserve it being left in this state.
Hotel was of good standard
Having an elderly mum been placed on the 3rd floor with no lift in service made it a challenge. Hotel could do with been more disabled friendly as there was no ramps
The staff are amazing. The Royal is undergoing a major refurb, but no inconvenience caused with the cleaner's doing an exceptional job. I was booked in for bed and breakfast of which the breakfast was well worth the money and the service again excellent.
Good property overall but undergoing renovations that we were not told about. This included work on the lift so this was not available. Room was well presented and very good quality. Good location close to many landmarks.
We stayed in a newly renovated sea view small double room and it was lovely. Little touches like the sensor light in the bathroom so no need to put a big light on during the night or the little reading lights each side of the side of the bed was nice. Breakfast had an amazing selection. Wish we could have stayed an extra night or 2.
Love this place especially with renovations and new restaurant. However do not put people in rooms directly over the ballroom (first floor, east wing), The live entertainment goes on until 11pm and literally shakes the room!
Was not aware of comprehensive building works and scaffolding around building. Parking was on street and payable as builders using hotel car park. Hot water in sink tap but not so hot in bathtap and plug in bath leaked. Otherwise quite good. Excellent sea view.
Just back after a three day stay at the Royal. We had a wonderful time. The room was clean and had everything we needed. The bar was spacious with plenty of seating. We will definitely be returning.
The staff were excellent on arrival - friendly and informative. The room was comfortable, though the limited opening of the window restricted the amount of fresh air that could be drawn in.
The building is currently undergoing refurbishment and the scaffolding on the outside did impact the sea view somewhat, but this did not detract from the overall experience.
This property has gone a long way since I last visited Whitby in terms of Bar and Restaurant.
Food, service and Staff are excellent!
The owners still have a lot of work to do with the accommodation, but its got to be a big work in progress.
The room was clean however it was tired and dated.
Unfortunately the hotel was under work at time of our visit hence no lift. We were put on ground floor but had to go outside and along go in fire door to get to room. Brother was at top of hotel so once down for breakfast didnât go back up untill bed time we are all 3 in our 70 with having health problems Iâm sure in time with all work cared out it will be much improved
I liked the location and view of the harbour and Abby from our room. This was somewhat obscured by some blurring of one of the window pains
What I didnât like was the quality of the room appearance and furnishings for a superior room parts of which were also rather grubby. The hotel was in the process of renovations so day to day areas were closed off and various diversions in places
The property is unique to Whitby a true landmark but for years it has looked tired and rundown. We have stayed everywhere in Whitby but booked this trip last minute so not much accommodation available. The photos in the booking hide a lot of what you see when you get there. Although staff were helpful the property lets everything else down. They are in the middle of a refurb but itâs really only a tosh over. This place needs millions spent on it and all they are doing is putting plasters over major cuts. The breakfast was ok but you get a kiddies plate to eat it from. The breakfast layout was a shambles and they kept running out of everything. Our room was not cleaned and on both mornings we were woken by water pouring in through the ceiling. The windows in the room were filthy and the curtain was stained brown. The paint job was horrendous with no preparation being done before hand. As I said it was a tosh over. Shame as it has the potential to be a fantastic hotel. We will not be returning.
Going through a refurb.. which we knew about.. we had a refurbished roo. Which was very good, clean and enough spacefor our 2 day stay. Special mention to all the staff who were extremely helpful and polite
The property is a construction site with no lifts. We were but on the 3rd floor and needed to carry our luggage up the stairs ourselves. Yet there were no information about the property being ubder renovation when booking.
We weren't warned about ongoing work in hotel and we requested a Seaview room which was a nice room but the windows were full of scaffolding which was off putting but on the whole a good break
