This 1 km² island has been a nature reserve since 1936 and has been part of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve since 1990. On the island of Vilm, up to 30 people can take part in guided hikes daily from March through October.
Putbus is the youngest town on the island of Rügen and is only 3 kilometers from Wreechen. Here you’ll find not only the beautiful castle park and the Putbus Circus. Be sure to check out the cultural events as well, such as the festival, the sailing and harbor festival, and the Rügen Cabaret Regatta. These are just a few of the most notable events in Putbus.
Lauterbach, the oldest seaside resort on the island of Rügen, has a small, quaint harbor. There, you can buy fish fresh off the fishermen’s boats. And if you find yourself at the harbor, you absolutely must try one of the best fish sandwiches in the area. You can get one at Berta. Regional delicacies are also served in the small, cozy restaurants.
Right at the harbor, shipping companies offer sightseeing cruises by boat. Take advantage of this opportunity and explore the island of Rügen from the water. For those who aren’t quite so sea-worthy, a sightseeing trip on the “Rasender Roland” is a great alternative. It takes you through the villages and Baltic Sea resorts all the way to Göhren.
