Zeer basic, verouder hotel zonder enige extras
Hotel Monte Carlo is een heel basic hotel. Op zich was onze kamer steeds netjes en de bedden werden altijd opgemaakt en waren fris. Echter is het gebouw zeer oud en afgeleefd. Het is zeker aan een grote opfrisbeurt toe. Het tapijt in heel het hotel is vervaagd en vol vlekken. Er hing gewoon een onaangename, onfrisse sfeer in het gebouw. Het zag er allemaal een beetje kaduuk uit. Het personeel was afstandelijk en niet echt gastvrij. Enkele stukken fruit in de ijskast leggen bleek ook een groot probleem te zijn, desondanks de warmte en de onmogelijkheid om etenswaren op de kamer te houden. Her en der lagen er dode kakkerlakken (grote jongens) op het terras en in de gangen, die daar dan ook bleven liggen. De parking die zou gepast zijn voor 6 voertuigen, is dit absoluut niet. als er 4 wagens staan kunnen de 2 eerste niet meer uitrijden. In de buurt rondom is er ook weinig parking en kan je vaak enkel parkeren op onwettige plekken. Het ontbijt was superbasic en elke dag hetzelfde, voor 7 euro p.p. aan het "buffet" waren enkele producten vervallen en beschimmeld.Op de dienborden liepen kleine insectjes. De buurt rondom het hotel is vuil en loopt vol straatkatten en straathonden. Dat hoor je 's nachts heel goed. En als je 's avonds naar het centrum gat om te relaxen, kan je steeds terug de hele steile berg op.. Goed voor 1 dag als passage maar niet voor een hele reis.

Schimmel in de badkamer we kregen eerst een hele kleine kamer waren we het niet mee eens kregen een betere kamer was bijna het enige positieve hier gaan we dus nooit meer heen

Mooie locatie nabij centrum
Prima hotel met ouderwetse grandeur en prachtig uitzicht op Funchal en de zee. Rustige stek nabij centrum; rekening houden met ligging op hoogte (wat steile smalle straatjes). Ontbijtbuffet keurig verzorgd. Paar keer in hotel gegeten, niet bijzonder maar prima en makkelijk. Parkeren bij hotel mogelijk onder afgifte van autosleutel (valetparking). Zeer vriendelijk en behulpzaam personeel.

Heel fijn verblijf in een hotel met de grandeur van vroeger. Fijn personeel dat heel goed Engels spreekt. Comfortabele en schone kamers. Omdat er in Madeira geen stranden zijn, is het fijn dat het hotel over een zwembad beschikt.Kan dit hotel een ieder aanraden!

You can take the hotel zone, give me Hotel Monte Carlo! Built in 1904 for a rich Brazilian merchant and converted into a hotel in 1964, it is in the center of Funchal close to the Quinta das Cruzes and the Convento de Santa Clara. The view from the black and white pebbled mosaic terrace is delightful, especially at night overlooking the lights of the hills of Funchal down to the ocean. I prefer the rooms in the old part of the hotel, (there is also a modern annex) spacious with high ceilings and big casement windows, a bathroom and terrace, cable tv (albeit small) with telephone and free local calls. There is a little swimming pool, restaurant and bar. We prefered breakfast at the Prince Charles snackbar on the Rua da Mouraria, but the hotel breakfast is perfectly acceptable. Everything is clean and tidy with daily maid service. The staff are helpful and friendly and the proud owner likes a chat with his guests. Wifi is only available in the lobby and I would recommend that you use your own laptop/tablet as the hotel computer is a bit slow. This three star hotel is a little frayed on the edges, but the price, service and location are fantastic! May I recommend the Armazen do Sal on the Rua Alfendega for lunch or dinner.

Een charmant, ietwat vergane-glorie hotel. Het personeel was attent en vriendelijk, de kamer goed en dagelijks schoon. Alles is basic, maar meer dan redelijk gezien de prijs. Het uitzicht vanaf het terras is adembenemend!

I have stayed at the Monte Carlo for over 20 years and they have always looked after my needs with great care and compassion. The hotel is set in a wonderful position in the town ( not the soulless hotel zone) overlooking the sea and mountains. It’s a period hotel, with tremendous charm with a pool on the roof at a certain price point. We visited in April 2024 and the staff were fabulous and the stay in Madeira a joy. The Monte Carlo is a period gem, but not a modern chain hotel. If you want a slice of Madeira stay.. close if steep walk to the whole town, museums and restaurants. 24 hour desk, limited parking ( but parking in the area) simple bu cheep breakfast, comfortable and large period rooms. Like Madeira itself charming, quirky and old school.

Charming hotel, quite central and wibes of the 60-ts jetset so a bit dated, but clean an familiar. The wievs are the best, the negatives are the hard beds and no ac. Lovely little rooftop pool. Walk down to center or old town and take a taxi home, easy and cheep if you dont want to climb the hill up...

The facade looks nice and charming in the outside but the property and rooms look more like a hostel. No air conditioned, worn carpets, nothing like the pictures.

Complete disappointment. Website is not repsentative of reality. No air conditioning, no fans, no fridge, no ice machine, no hair dryer, no safe. You need to ask to borrow a dryer. You need to leave your room and car keys with the front desk when you leave. We had to pay 2 euros for a few pieces of ice. They also added a charge of 2 euros for used mismatched plastic cups. Everything was outdated and in weathered condition. The ceiling in our room was patched with paper and masking tape. There is NO swim up bar as per website. The pool had green algae all around. TV was outdated. Wifi was only available in front lobby. Red carpet in main stairs was used and faded. There was supposed to be music from 4pm until midnight. We barely heard anything and the sound system was also outdated. We were supposed to stay for 4 nights but left the next day.

Disappointing.. not what it seems
The hotel room was a disappointment, breakfast buffet was very lacking and the buffet space was very small. The parking lot only has space for 3 cars and it is mostly occupied by the workers. The workers had no uniform or anything that showed they worked there, no nametag, nothing, so when we gave our key away we were wondering if we were actually giving it to a random stranger. In the buffet tiny room you have a window to the kitchen and from there I could see the worker coughing on the food and with her earphones the whole time. The fruit wasn't fresh, it was canned fruit. Breakfast had very few options. Regarding the cleaning, the lady was very nice and the rooms were properly cleaned. The only good thing is the view.

Lovely old hotel. Interior a bit outdated but that also adds to its charm. The only thing that I didn’t like was a breakfast, basic and with unacceptable dirty plates, cups and cutlery. After two days just skipped it and had it in some of nice pastelarias in town.

Herligt hotel
Monte Carlo er et fantastisk sted at holde ferie, hvis man som jeg elsker ro og harmoni. Stilen er gammel, hvilket jeg også godt kan lide. Meget højt til loftet og flotte gamle døre og vinduer. Elevatoren fører dig til de forskelle afdelinger, og jeg boede på 2 etage, hvor der også var en dejlig lille swimmingpool, Herfra er der udsigt over Funchal og ned til havnen, hvor de store cruiseskibe også ligger. Underholdninger for mig var Hollywood Chanel på værelset og i Hotellets bar. Det var faktisk gode film der var på kanalen. Det var dejlig afslapning, når jeg kom tilbage til hotellet efter lange traveture rundt omkring på øen. Sengen og badeværelset var også helt fint. En dygtig tjener, som har en god fornemmelse for kundepleje, sørger for at du kan få en lækker gin og tonic. Der var mange at vælge imellem og det var vidunderligt at sidde på deres terrasse foran indgangen og nyde en dejlig aftensmad bestående af deres lokale fiskeret Espada med de lækreste grøntsager til og dejligt ristet brød. Herfra har du også den skønneste udsigt ud over byen og ned til vandet. Jeg syntes det er skønt at der stadigvæk findes sådanne gamle og nostalgiske, autentiske hoteller og jeg håber Monte Carlo vil fortsætte stilen, for det er bare så hyggeligt. Tusind tak for en dejlig ferie hos jer. Kan på det varmeste anbefale stedet, men det er vigtigt at kunne gå opad, for selvom der var trappen fra gaden, var det lidt anstrengende. Ellers er det bedst at tage en taxa derop.

Fiquei hospedada com o meu namorado durante 3 noites. Quando chegámos ao hotel deparamo-nos com instalações muito velhas, nomeadamente, no hall de entrada e no quarto (rachas nas paredes, chão a ranger, decoração antiquada e envelhecida). É de salientar, também, que para quem tem dificuldades em adormecer, há um problema na porta que deixa passar a luz do corredor e pode causar um desconforto. Para além disto, o hotel dispõe de um parque de estacionamento gratuito, no entanto, não está explícito que este é minúsculo e, caso não haja espaço, o carro tem que ser estacionado noutro local. Acerca do pequeno almoço, apenas tenho a fazer uma observação acerca dos ovos mexidos que estavam péssimos, tinham um sabor e cor estranhos. Assim sendo, o hotel apenas compensa pela centralidade e vista da ilha do Funchal.

The building was constructed in 1905 and has gone through a number of transformations. The most recent owners have done a great job of upgrading while maintaining it's charm and character. A few very miner deficiences, but I would not hesitate to return.

O pessoal foi muito simpático. O quarto estava limpo, contudo está um pouco velho, para 3 estrelas acho que começa a precisar de obras. Mas como estava limpo e foi apenas para dormir serviu para o que precisava. O quarto tinha um pátio pequeno mas sem qualquer vista. A piscina tem umas visitas muito bonitas sobre o Funchal.

The bathroom was so outdated and water leaked onto the floor tiles from somewhere, not badly, but enough to make your feet wet. The view from the window was the roof swimming pool wall with a bit of a view above. Only stayed 2 nights otherwise would have moved. The overal building is old and decor shabby but interesting and the staff very polite and on hand. The terrace was lovely.

Historic 1905 Hotel with cozy rooms , captivating
I really enjoyed the 1905 beautiful MONTE CARLO HOTEL building, it has breathtaking, captivating view of the city. Pool on the roof. One could sit on the roof all day & enjoy captivating 180° view of the city, the bay, ocean, mountains. Pedro & Albino were very well mannered, cordial, helpful, kind people. My room was nice size, with spacious bathroom, it had a shower & a bath. It's 5 minutes walk to city center, the beach, old town, airport bus stop. Architecture around, walking towards hotel, or from, was also captivating, many beautiful, historical buildings. It also has a big space at the front entrance to the hotel, were one could sit, relax & enjoy the captivating view. There is a library, a lounge are on the 1st floor, it's really wonderful, relaxing, cozy. Am so glad & grateful to the owner for having me there, I enjoyed the breakfast/ lunch serv d by Albino, he was kind & caring person, cappuccino was delicious, can't wait to return & recommend it to fellow travelers. Thank you Albino & Pedro, Muito Obrigado ❤️🙏

Vieil hôtel sur les hauteurs, qu'on a adoré, grandes chambres avec superbe vue. Chambres basiques et lit peu confortable mais suffisant. Piscine fraîche mais très belle vue du roof top. La dame de l'accueil très sympathique nous a aidé à acheter nos billets de bateau pour Porto Santo.

Hotel itself is basic and dated but a pleasant walk from the centre and great views. Service was such that I'd never stay again though. Apon arriving around 9.30pm (says 24 hrs online) I entered by pushing a door with a green go sign on it and a staff member angrily asked me how i got in, implying I'd broken in and not just walked in. I explained I'd just opened the door which was recieved with further hostility. Then she said she'd take my passport, put it away and walked me to a room. I asked how long she'd have my passport for and she wouldn't say, but i pressed her on it and she eventually said 10 mins. Then, she left - an hour passes and she still hasn't returned my passport, so i find my way back to reception in another building and get it back from her. I check my booking and find that I've not been put in the room i paid for but a far smaller one with no patio and a cold shower. The next day this is fixed by a more professional member of staff, who tries to take my key off me and i say i'd rather keep it so I don't have to call in to reception in case that woman is there. she agrees. later, woman from first night chases me down the drive to take the key off me "because it's hotel policy". She didn't care that it had been okayed by someone above her, and in the end, i tired of her constant bullying and gave it to her because she wouldn't stop. I never asked why she put me in the wrong room, and she never acknowledged it. Bizarre.

Dear Mr Djemal As per your email we noted that unfortunately you have not enjoyed your recent stay at our Hotel, and we sorry for that. We would like to inform you that you can make check in at the Hotel 24h as mentioned on the website. Regarding passport we would like to inform you that we and all Hotels have to ask ID card or passport for all guests. As already explained at reception we have to fill in the SEF information, therefore we need you full name, ID or passport number, birth date, expire and issue date and nationality. Regarding the room it was given upon arrival a superior room near the pool on the next day we gave an upgrade for a triple sea view room near the pool with balcony with no extra charge. Concerning the Hot water on the room, we would like to inform that all the rooms near the pool area were occupied and all of them had hot water. We did not receive any complain on this matter. In respect of Hotel room keys as explained all our keys are manual therefore we ask all the guests when the go outside the hotel to leave them at the reception (Hotel Policy). Kindest regards HMC

Palace du début du XXeme siècle, un peu défraîchi mais plein de charme avec sa vue plongeante sur Funchal et ses grandes pièces hautes de plafond et parquettées. Agréable piscine. Petits déjeuners plutôt copieux.

Nice stay.
All the staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful! Very clean rooms. Looks a lot more modern in the photos than in real life. Amazing veiws from the outside areas. If you need to leave before 8am, you need to let them know as the front door and gate is locked. They tell you how to get out, but I couldnt figure out how to get out of the gate so had to chuck all my stuff over a wall and climb over as had to get to my ferry!

Great service although property a bit rundown
The service was wonderful. I spent my 12-hour mandatory quarantine (which turned into 16 hours) at the hotel. They were very accommodating, from pre-check in to check-in, dinner, breakfast, and even calling the authorities to try to get an update on the coronavirus test after the 12 hours had elapsed. I was pleasantly surprised to see that 1. They make you wear a mask even while in the room for safety reasons and continuously ensure you disinfect your hands. 2. They would not let me leave the hotel until I showed them my negative test result. The hotel is in a great location and has an amazing view. It is, however, a bit rundown with cracks all over the walls, dirty marks throughout and paint coming off. No air conditioning which could be a problem for many as well as only having wifi in the common areas. Despite this, the hotel is priced right for what you get and I would certainly recommend it to the minimalist travelers out there.

Hotel Monte Carlo- Funchal.
O hotel fica em uma colina com difícil acesso, pois as subidas incluem escadarias, e calçadas muito estreitas, só é recomendável para quem estiver de carro, pois não passa nenhum transporte público por perto, a única coisa boa é a vista, o café da manhã e o bar são muito ruins, o quarto e banheiro são amplos, porém não tem ar condicionado e nem ventilador, o Wi Fi só é acessível nas áreas comuns.

Dix jours inoubliable.
L’hôtel est très près du centre-ville, très pratique, la vue sur Funchal et la mer est magnifique. Les petits déjeunés sont copieux et différents chaque jour. Nous faisions pique-nique le midi là où nous nous trouvions sur l'île et resto différent chaque jour le soir en ville à Funchal.
