Very old building
The first room was dirty, the door lock was broken, the bathroom didn't flush properly and filled with mold. The window didn't close and worst of all I had to pay for WiFi. The night manager Antony was rude and sarcastic when I mentioned the room conditions.

First time for everything
I've stayed at this hotel probably 8-10 times and this is the first time I have had cause to rate it anything other than first class. I arrived to find my reservation had not been processed but the staff dealt this a minor IT glitch well and I was checked in. Room to the normal standard but at 05:30 I was awoken by the most horrendous disturbance in the street as the "milk lorry" seemed to deliver enough milk to last the hotel a year. Men laughing and shouting and obviously having no respect for guests. I would have hoped the night staff would have said something. Oh... and no electric in the room (hotel) when I arrived back after my evening. That said it is easy t forgive, this remains excellent value for money with a great, friendly staff and is in an excellent location. Shame about the milk lorry !!

Great place with a great price.
Really nice. Room was tiny but it's London, so to be expected. Pretty central location. Bed was probably the most comfortable of any hotel I've ever stayed at in London. Secret gem in the midst of not very good hotels in London.

EXCELLENT VALUE AND LOCATION
Booked one night and then had to arrive the day before so extended my stay with another booking. I rang the hotel to ensure I had the same room and they assured me it was not a problem - and it wasn't. Friendly welcome and you actually feel they want you to enjoy your stay - very helpful throughout my stay. Room was clean and well equipped. Like these "old" buildings there are some creaks and odd corners but that is part of the character.

Quiet hotel
Situated on a square, it avoids the bustle of London life, giving a more peaceful sleep. The headboard fell off the wall when I lent on it so it could be more kempt but for the price of London Hotels, I got what I expected. Great breakfast in the morning. Staff really helpful

Nice hotel in a lovely area
This is a great hotel in a lovely quiet area of Nottinghill. It's only a short walk to the tube station and Porterbello Road. The staff were very polite and friendly and made us feel welcome. The room was nice and spacious, and very clean. The bathroom was a bit pokey but to be expected for what we paid.

My room was ok except for the floor not being flat, therefore the bed was not level so it was uncomfortable sleeping, the curtains don't cover the whole window anything on the flat was on an angle due to the floor not being level. No free wifi at all

4th visit and 4th time happy and content. One of London's best kept secrets. Good value, clean rooms. Not luxury but very comfortable and clean. Staff are great, friendly and helpful. Location is close to bars, pubs and near enough to Notting Hill and other localities. Parking is easy too. What more do you want?

Great hotel for the price
I stay in this type of hotel fairly often - it consists of small rooms in what used to be one of london's grand town houses. It provides the basics, clean building, TV, comfortable bed and a small bathroom. Location was good and the staff friendly. At this price range you can get some really bad hotels, but the UMI kind of stands out - you can tell they have a similar budget to many similar hotels but use it more wisely. You can't expect the moon on a stick at these kind of prices, but what they do, they do it well. Check out some of my other reviews for similar hotels that don't get it right!

Everything was great, but matress needs an upgrade
Everything about this hotel was great, however, the matress had no padding on it at all, meaning I could feel the springs under me when laying on the bed. It was warm enough that I was able to sleep on top of the duvet cover, making it more comfortable.

Value for money - but a typical Britsh shower
This hotel offers good value for money - but don't judge it by US standards. The rooms are small and tired but. for the price, they are very good value for money. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and the location pleasant. The shower shows all the signs of typical British attitudes - it's there, don't question whether you can get consistent pressure and temperature - but I'd use it again when lack of better options requires.

Umi Notting Hill
A lovely location first of all- typical notting hill setting- lovely gardens, gorgeous town houses and quiet streets...but just around the corner from bayswater tube and notting hill gate tube, with restaurants, cafes, bars...everything! Very friendly staff, very helpful and allowed to use the luggage room before checking in and after checking out. This hotel is not wonderful in terms of 5 * luxury, but you get what you pay for. it was well priced for what it is, and we had a lovely room (just like the picture on the website) good window, lots of mirrors, wardrobe, fine bed, tv, etc.....the bathroom is only a shower and a toilet- very small and the sink is in the room, but again this is fine and is to be expected with the price. Overall a good stay, I would recommend it to anyone- as long as you are not after a 5* luxury break - very reasonable, nice hotel, great location, friendly staff!

Definitely, this is a nice hotel. Surrounding areas is decent and it's close to the tube which can lead you to all the areas that you want to see in London. Few drawbacks - Bathroom is incredibly small. if you are over 6 feet tall, you will have problems fitting in the tight space. You have to pay for wi-fi internet access. Overall, it was a good stay.

Good option in a convenient location
We were very happy with our stay at the Umi. The location is good - close to three tube stations, with plenty of food options available in Bayswater and Hyde Park, Oxford Street and Notting Hill easy walks. The hotel itself is exactly what you expect from a mid-range London hotel - good service, tidy, compact room and good facilities. No complaints at all.

Regular London visitor
The location is great and the reception area looks decent, but the good things stop there! The single rooms are quite tiney and the floor is seriously uneven. The building is really old and some of the flooring is distubingly unstable. I arrived very early in the morning because of my early flight, and expected the hotel to show some cooperation in providing me with an early check in. The hotel refused to give me a room even 5 minutes before the published 1400. I have to say that the housekeeping standard was good.

You Get What You Pay For
What drew me to this hotel was the location: a short walk to the Notting Hill Tube, Portobello Road, Kensington High Street, etc. The price was also right, compared to other budget hotels in the vicinity. But perhaps I'm just a spoiled American; I've come to expect complimentary wifi (and it's not cheap here). It's also apparent that this hotel is a renovation job, as most of the attempts to modernize the space aren't really all that successful. If you're looking for a (sort of) cheap place and will generally be using your room to store your belongings and sleep, Umi is fine. Suited my purposes, at least.

ok for a budget stay
Service was polite & efficient. Single room was small & hot - but they gave me a fan, which made it bearable. Bed was soft, so not that comfortable. The bathroom was cramped even with just the toilet & shower. - the basin was in the bedroom. Full of large noisy groups of teenage students, which were always clustered around the front steps/lounge & a pain to negotiate - but quiet enough at night. Well situated for Bayswater restaurants, shops & transport. All-in-all ok igf you can get it cheap enough!

Good value in a good location
I was looking for a comfortable, affordable hotel in a good location, and Umi fit the bill. It was less than 10 minutes' walk from the nearest Underground station. The room was small (no surprise), and clean. The hotel was quiet and I had a nice view of a park across the street. I thought the staff were very friendly and helpful. When housekeeping forgot to restock my coffee, the front desk had someone run up a couple of packets at 4:30 am when I was getting up to check out. Not the biggest deal, but a nice touch. Internet in the lobby area was reasonably priced and convenient. The neighborhood around the hotel is nice -- lots of shops and restaurants. I'd definitely stay here again!

Two star room in a Three Star Hotel
While this hotel is above its class in general service and reception facilities and a gorgeous dining room, the rooms are a disgrace. The rooms are NOT renovated; they are old and decrepit. You do not even have one faucet for hot and cold water but separate faucets for each. The rooms are incredibly tiny, the furniture is old and torn. The bathrooms are incredibly small and there is a damp stench in the hallways. I asked for another room which was the same thing over again; they do not have any renovated rooms. The rooms are a two star class and that is what you are paying for. In the summer there is no A/C. So, if London is warm (as it was when I was there) the 3rd and 4th floors are unbearably hot. However, there is a lovely view from the rooms facing a small park and it is a great location. Also, the hotel reception is very friendly with lots of services including free newspapers, free TimeOut, free magazines, tour bookings, maps, etc.... While the price is incredibly cheap given the overall hotel, you have to compare it against other 2 stars the room is certainly NOT a three star. This is based on years of experience staying in London hotels (3 and 4 stars and a couple 2 stars).

Beware!
Specific request for 3rd fl room was confirmed 2 times and denied at check in. 2 senior ladies required to walk from 4th to 5th floor (no lift). Tiny room, toilet not working properly; shower water minimal; fully booked with students & very, very loud. Would not recommend to anyone. The serving staff were friendly, but that hardly helps things. The location was okay to walk around in the daytime, but not at night and there wasn't a close Tube station. Not too difficult to get a cab, but expensive.

I would definitely return.
I had a very good experience at UMI hotel. The staff was very attentive to my needs, and wanted to make sure I was taken care of. The hotel is a little older - but was very clean, and most importantly - at a very central location to London. Didn't find the hotel as quickly as I would've liked - perhaps some good walking directions from Bayswater Station might be added to it's hotel information. I would return to this hotel.

Impossible to find
While this hotel is close to a tube station, the street signs around it have different names then the names you would find for the same streets on a map. We walked around for an hour looking for this hotel and asked 6 people (all of whom seemed to live or work in the area) and only the last one knew where it was. Most of them did not even recognize the street name, much less have ever heard the hotel name. The neighborhood is a very interesting neighborhood. We never felt unsafe but it wasn't the nicest neighborhood either. The room was incredibly small and not very clean. While the staff wasn't rude, they did not seem to want to help either. They provide a storage room for bags but it is down the hall from the check in desk and they give you the key to unlock it yourself. It seemed like they would give the key to anyone that asked.

Christmas in comfort
My friend and I decided that, during my winter break at the Sorbonne, we would go around the UK. So we were in London for Christmas, and as my present my parents paid for a couple nights at this hotel. It was a lovely change from the hostels, and well worth it; beautiful neighborhood, not far from some food places and two tube stations, and the hotel itself was small and comfortable. I have only a few small complaints to make of it, only one of which may apply to others. 1) the beds were dressed with no top sheet, just a comforter (I prefer sleeping with a sheet; however, my friend was pleased because she never sleeps with a top sheet, so to each their own) 2) no free wi-fi, though it was only 7 pounds for 24 hrs, not too bad. 3) because it is an old building, you can hear the floorboards creaking above you, and if you have particularly impolite neighbors you can hear them shouting and screaming as well (please don't have parties in your room at 2 am, it's really annoying) Overall, I'd go back!

Interesting area
This was the first visit to London, and I did not have any specific expectations. The neighborhood was quiet and neat. The area was very unique in that these hotels apparently had been personal homes that have been acclimated to accomodations for travelors. Service was good, they were very helpful and this enhanced our vist to London.

The room's the size of a small closet and they charge exorbitant rates for using the phone even if you have a calling card. Granted, I didn't go to London to stay in a hotel room and still had a great time on my vacation, but...it would have been nice to have a more comfortable setting to return to at night.

Good value for the money and the downstairs bar is open late. The room was small (like all London Hotels) but very clean. A mixed bag
The Umi is in a great, central location, near the Paddington train station and Bayswater Tube station and is situated on a lovely, leafy square of Georgian terrace houses. I have stayed in this hotel on three separate occasions, each time booking a single room. Because the hotel has been converted from combined terrace houses, the rooms are all different sizes and shapes. On my first stay, I was given a double bed and a good size room. On the second stay, I had a single bed in a small room with an even smaller bathroom. It was the kind of bathroom where when you sat on the toilet, your knees and legs were in the shower. On my third stay, the room was an even smaller single room - about the size of a walk-in closet! I had to store my suitcase under the narrow desk that ran the length of the room. There was literally no other floor space for it! The furniture in the all rooms was a bit tatty and well-worn. However, the beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean. There were tea making facilities, flat screen TVs, and hairdryers in each room. Another plus was that there were 4 computers in the reception with internet access for a small fee, although if you have your own computer, wifi is available in each room. The hotel also has a small locked room for luggage storage. Overall, this hotel was clean, quiet, and I was able to get a good night's rest. Plus, you simply can't beat the price and great location. Despite being a bit rough around the edges, I would stay there again.

Loved it!!!
Although the rooms are tiny (but bout right for london hotel rooms) and the floors are creaky (of course because these are old victorian buildings), my experience was fantastic!! i was at the umi for 2 separate stays, and both times, i have only positive things to say. the hotel definitely has a strong traveller vibe (and lots of younger travellers, not so many families with young children and elder members) so there is some noise later at night (which i did not mind at all). food in the restaurant was quite good, on-site internet access (with a well-valued internet card), cable tv,...i will absolutely be staying there again.
