4/10
A stay at the Hazelwick left us bemused and as if weâd spent a night in a parallel reality.
Iâm fine with quirky places but this was on another level. There were some good points- our room was more of a cottage with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchen. The location was good for Gatwick airport and we received a friendly welcome.
However, when we arrived, the owner didnât answer the door and another guest had been waiting there for over half an hour despite it being 40 minutes after check in. We eventually raised the owner on the phone and sheâd been inside all along!
We got the distinct impression she hadnât been expecting us! We were then ushered into the garden while she rushed to make up a room for us. She never asked our names. We couldâve been anyone!!
In the garden were two dogs which jumped up at us constantly having bolted down the road resulting in another guest having to run after them! My biggest concern was that the garden was full of dog muck (eughh) which the dogs were treading in and then putting their paws all over us. As we were shown our room 30 minutes later, the dogs came in too but worse still, the door had a dog flap so it was very difficult to keep them out.
The room itself was ok, a bit shabby in places- think hippy vibe. One shower wasnât working, but the other did.
We left feeling that the owner is struggling a little with the running of the guesthouse and not quite in control. Itâs in serious need of some refurbishment too.
